About Stoop

Stoop is an open-source, self-hostable chat and voice app for communities. You run it on your own hardware and invite your people. It is named for the place out front where everyone hangs out.

The gap it fills

Group chat forces a bad choice today. The big hangout platforms set the benchmark for communities, but your community's whole history lives on their servers under their rules. Workplace chat is built for companies. Federated chat gets ownership right but makes running a server heavy. Stoop is for the middle: a friend group or a community that wants the hangout experience, with their data on hardware one member can realistically run.

What it is

• One binary and Postgres. The web app is embedded. Voice rooms use LiveKit, which is optional.
• Spaces and channels, realtime text with replies, reactions, edits, pins, search and link previews, direct messages, and voice with camera and screen share.
• Invite-only. No directory, no discovery.
• Apache-2.0. The source is at github.com/getstoop/stoop.

Who makes it

Stoop is published by get stoop LLC, the legal entity that holds the project's domain and code-signing certificates. The project is in beta and in daily use. Federation, end-to-end encryption and mobile apps are deliberately later.
